Our technicians use a 20-point HVAC checklist to review your system from top to bottom. Our checklist covers several points, including:

  • Indoor Unit Maintenance: Inspecting your system for damage, cleaning evaporator coils, checking ductwork for leaks, changing the air filter, and inspecting for carbon monoxide leaks.

  • System Performance: Verifying refrigerant levels, checking the HVAC motor amps, testing the system efficiency, and ensuring proper temperature differences between supply and return air.

Why Get Annual HVAC Service?

HVAC experts recommend having your system inspected and maintained at least twice a year. The best times for these tune-ups are in early spring and at the tail end of summer as we move into autumn. These seasonal changes can be strenuous to your system, and neglecting to perform regular maintenance can worsen these problem. Performing preventative maintenance can dramatically decrease the possibility of your system breaking down during the hottest summer months and the coldest winter months.

When done by a professional, an HVAC, Heating and A/C tune-up can reduce the risk of an untimely breakdown, increase the lifespan of your unit, and lower your heating and cooling bills by enabling your system to run more efficiently. And our technicians will treat you honestly and with integrity; we will never recommend unnecessary upgrades or sell you equipment that isn’t necessary to keep your system running optimally. It’s our goal to be certain that you’ll be  comfortable all year long in your home.

HVAC Frequently Asked Questions

If you are a homeowner, then you will want to educate yourself with general knowledge about your HVAC system, especially prior to a tune-up. Knowing a bit more about your heating and air conditioning system may give you some insights into how you can more efficiently use your HVAC, learn best practices for maintaining your system, and understand the expected lifespan of your HVAC. Here are some frequently-asked questions about HVAC systems to get you started.

How often should I have my HVAC system serviced?

It’s recommended to service your HVAC system at least once or twice a year—typically in the spring for cooling systems and fall for heating systems. While biannual service is recommended, you may want to consider changing your filters more frequently to ensure clean airflow.

How often should I change my air filter?

Generally, it is recommended to change your HVAC air filter every 1-3 months, depending on usage and whether you have pets or allergies. A filter change is usually completed during an HVAC tune-up performed by a professional, though this can easily be accomplished by most homeowners. Be sure to measure the size of your filter slot so that you can purchase a filter that is sized correctly.

How long does an HVAC system last?

The lifespan of an HVAC system varies, but generally furnaces last 15-20 years, air conditioning units last 10-15 years, and heat pumps last 10-15 years. Regular maintenance of your HVAC can ensure that your heating and cooling systems have a longer lifespan and can run more efficiently.

What size HVAC system do I need for my home?

The optimal size of your HVAC depends on factors like square footage, insulation, regional climate, and number of windows. One of our professional HVAC technicians can perform a load calculation to determine the right size for your home.

What’s the difference between a heat pump and a furnace?

A furnace generates heat by burning fuel (gas or oil), while a heat pump transfers heat from the outside air or ground to warm your home. At McClain Bros. our technicians are capable of performing repairs and installations of all these components.

What temperature should I set my thermostat to?

Your ideal thermostat temperature will change throughout the year as the seasons change in the greater Philadelphia area. If you want to put the least amount of stress on your HVAC system while enjoying a temperate climate in your home, then you can use the following settings. In summer, set the thermostat to 75-78°F when you’re home and 82-85°F when away. In winter, set the thermostat to 68-72°F when home, and lower it when you’re out of the house. Just be sure to keep the temperature in your home above 50 in the winter, even if you aren’t home for prolonged periods, so that you can prevent your pipes from freezing and rupturing.

How can I make my HVAC system more energy efficient?

There are many things you can do to keep your HVAC system from running efficiently and extending its lifespan. Generally, getting regular maintenance performed on your system, sealing ducts and adding insulation as needed, and utilizing your programmable thermostat to automatically set temperatures throughout the day are all good ways to keep your system running smoothly.
